Service Description: This feature layers shows areas where California Geological Survey (CGS) has conducted studies of potential occurrence of radon and geographic areas in California where the California Department of Conservation, CGS has conducted Mineral Land Classification studies to identify mineral resources available. The Radon Boundaries layer shows the boundary of each study area. The attribute table describes each report title, identification number, author, location, and year of publication. The Mineral Land Classification layers contains polygons of those geographic areas in California where the California Department of Conservation, California Geological Survey (CGS) has conducted Mineral Land Classification studies to identify mineral resources available. Each polygon represents a report produced and published by CGS. Mineral Land Classification studies are produced by the State Geologist as specified by the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA, PRC 2710 et seq.) of 1975. To address mineral resource conservation, SMARA mandated a two-phase process called classification-designation. Classification is carried out by the State Geologist, and designation is a function of the State Mining and Geology Board. The classification studies contained here evaluate the mineral resources and present this information in the form of Mineral Resource Zones. The objective of the classification-designation process is to ensure, through appropriate local lead agency policies and procedures, that mineral materials will be available when needed and do not become inaccessible because of inadequate information during the land-use decision-making process. The classification studies are differentiated in the map by each covered area which is defined as following:AREA STUDY REPORTS: The limits of these studies are usually based on USGS quadrangles or have unusual shapes covering the areas of interest that may or may not match political boundaries.COUNTY STUDY: The limits of these studies follow the political boundaries of a given county.PRODUCTION AREA: The limits of the production area are based on where resources are available for extraction but are not necessarily consumed internally. The boundary does not follow political territory.PRODUCTION-CONSUMPTION REGION (PC-Region): P-C Regions are defined as market regions in which 95 percent or more of the aggregate produced is also consumed.PETITION REPORTS: The limits of petition reports are usually small enough to be represented as points in the California map. Petitions may be brought before the State Mining and Geology Board (SMGB) by any individual or organization to classify mineral lands that are claimed to contain significant mineral deposits.
